Mount Kanlaon is an active andesitic stratovolcano straddling Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental, with a summit elevation of 2,435 meters — the highest peak in the Visayas and the highest active volcano in the Philippines south of Luzon. The main campsite is at Saddle Camp, a clearing below the crater rim accessible via the Wasay-Guintubdan Trail or the Mapo Trail. Trekkers pass through mossy montane forest and encounter unique flora as they ascend; the crater summit offers views of the fumarolic vent and surrounding Negros lowlands on clear days. The climb typically takes two days with an overnight at Saddle Camp. All climbers must secure a permit from the Office of the Park Superintendent before the climb. The park permit fee is PHP 320 per person (PHP 220 for students). A licensed guide is mandatory at PHP 700 per day. Porters are available at PHP 500 per day. Equipment rental including tents, sleeping bags, and cooking gear is available from guide services in Canlaon City or Bacolod. The mountain is an active volcano and may be placed under alert levels; climbers must check PHIVOLCS alerts and LGU advisories before booking. No campfires inside the protected area.
