Mount Apo, at 2,954 metres above sea level, is the highest peak in the Philippines and straddles the borders of Davao del Sur, Davao City, and North Cotabato. Climbing it requires advance permits arranged through the LGU tourism office of the chosen trailhead (Sta. Cruz in Davao del Sur is popular for the circuit route). The primary high-altitude campsite is beside Lake Venado at roughly 2,200 MASL—a mossy, weather-swept alpine lake that serves as the overnight base for most multi-day summit attempts. The lake's surroundings include pitcher plants, elfin forest, and fumarolic features near the crater. All camping at Mount Apo is self-sustained tent camping; no fixed structures or glamping exist at Lake Venado. Permits are strictly required: climbing permits cost PHP 1,500–2,000, environmental fees are PHP 200–300, and a separate camping fee of PHP 200 applies at Lake Venado. Trail slots are capped and must be booked 6–8 weeks in advance. The mountain observes an annual closure from June 1 to August 31 for ecological rehabilitation. A licensed guide is mandatory; porters are available at PHP 500 per day.
