How to Camp Safely During Philippine Rainy Season
Juan dela Cruz
Many campers pack away their gear from June to October, but rainy season camping in the Philippines has its own magic — lush green landscapes, fewer crowds, dramatic skies, and cooler temperatures.
Here's how to do it safely:
**Waterproofing Is Everything** Invest in a quality tent with a full rainfly and sealed seams. Use a ground tarp (footprint) to prevent water from seeping in from below. Keep all electronics and dry clothes in waterproof bags.
**Site Selection** Never camp in a riverbed or dry creek — flash floods happen fast. Choose higher ground with natural drainage. Avoid camping under dead trees or coconut palms that could drop branches in strong winds.
**Lightning Safety** If thunderstorms approach, avoid ridgelines, isolated tall trees, and open fields. If you're in a tent, crouch on your sleeping mat (insulation from ground current). The safest option is a hard-topped vehicle.
**Clothing Strategy** Forget staying dry — you won't. Instead, bring quick-dry clothing and always keep one complete dry outfit sealed in a waterproof bag for sleeping. Synthetic fabrics over cotton.
**Check Advisories** PAGASA weather bulletins are free. During typhoon season (August–November), check forecasts 48 hours before departure and have a cancellation plan. No campsite is worth risking your safety.
